Huw UK Job Market review 2026

Though I have successfully managed to navigate many a storm in my employment history and keep my head above water maintaining a position in the job market for most of the last 30 years or so. Surviving the closure of companies, redundancies and also businesses no longer having enough money to hire me or restructuring me out of a roles on the odd occasion. I am more blessed with some of the areas that I have worked than cursed and have met some great people along the way and had a lot of fun at times spending some of the money that I have hard earned. I have at no time found getting a job or trying to get promoted or change jobs easy, in anyway shape or form and there are several patterns of behaviour by employers across the post industrial service sector that have developed across the service sector and government employers that are a concern for me and do not look to change in the medium to short term if any thing things are getting worse and accelerating into a darker place quicker now than ever before.

My present employer no longer employees any administration staff (by way of having admin in any job titles) to undertake work even though a considerable amount of what I would call administrative work still needs to take place in order for the organisation to function effectively and efficiently and get things done. You are either an apprentice an employment officer, employment support officer or manager, senior manager or director. More often than not you also need to have direct experience of doing a job already before they will hire you to do a job so internal recruitment opportunities are very few and far between unless, you have probably guessed it, you are already doing the job you are applying for.

I get this (I don’t like it though) and understand this how they operate and so to gain experience and improve my employability I go out of my comfort zone and so have expanded my employment experiences by in the last 10 months working part time on top of my full time job role for a housing association on a residents board that explores areas of change and improvement to be recommended to the housing association by residents and staff. I have enjoyed this role its been an unpaid post and has really helped me expand my knowledge base and experience whilst also helped me learn new skills and hopefully prove that I am employable to other potential employers in the long run.

So with my new found set of skills and employment experiences I started to try and look for other areas of work both with my own employer and also with other organisations that I would hope to work for and with. In a relatively short space of time I managed to get invited to two interviews out of three adverts that i had applied for, so not too bad success rate so far. One of the roles was an administration role which would have resulted in a pay cut and leaving the organisation I work for now and the other role was a potential promotion into an almost corporate executive role.

Well I had both interviews on the same day and the role that really stood out as a better opportunity was the one with my present employer, although in hindsight that interview went terribly right from the start and the project lead had no interest in hiring me and I think she did not even want to interview me either and I was possibly sifted out as a potentially suitable recruit by HR not her.

Just before I left the interview I spoke up saying thank you for this interview opportunity it really does feel like exciting times to work here, to which the HR person on the panel agreed and the project manager of the role quibbled in to say that the whole thing was a nightmare, leaving me with an impression that she was either overwhelmed and out of her depth or just disinterested in the whole concept of the project that she faced trying to hire a team of people to do her job for her with which was not me. Suffice to say I was told that I did not have the job and did not have the correct employment experience. So why they bothered to interview me in the first place god only knows. I also was not offered the other role due to a better candidate on the day too.

Not just viewing this from my personal experience of employment and employability over the last 30 years but the service sector or office and government based employment roles that have sustained an employment for the last 30 years no longer exist and are likely to not return under current trends and predictions.

My first job that I got that opened my world to being a productive employee in an organisation that I loved to work for and appreciated my working for them in my early 20’s I just cant see me being able to obtain the role again if I were trying to enter a role in the job market in todays environment compared with pack in the 1990’s.

My employment experience consisted of a failed degree which then led me to move in with parents and work at a local Castle on the edge of Dartmoor for a charity called the National Trust doing gardening for them, that opportunity led me to go and work for a local Estate Agents as an office junior, which then led to me then getting an awesome varied and rewarding job with the Devon Wildlife Trust as a low and behold Administrative Assistant, where I earned enough money to move out of my parents house and in with some friends, I though my career truly had begun and I felt I could work hard and be rewarded for my hard work at the same time.

The whole concept of no more admin anymore in a lot of employers across the developed world and the computerisation and automation of roles for efficiency purposes is both logical and a race to the jobless market. If we get rid of all employees or a large proportion of employees through ever innovative forms of computerisation and automation, just what are said employees or unemployees supposed to do with themselves and how will they afford to buy products and services within an economy and how will a developed economy sustain itself with an ever increasing populace that are either unable or due to the barriers they face unwilling to work and contribute income taxes into a system that has sustained people throughout my lifetime.

Better to have lived, worked and lost than to have never lived, worked and lost at all.

This is about not just living a rewarding life and navigating personal or global storms, but having enough money to live a rewarding life keeping your head above water and being done in a way that is sustainable for all not just a lucky few.

What do we do when the machines do the work and AI does the thinking?

Will it be heaven or will it be a further insight into hell, the choice might still be ours to make and the only vote is for how it happens and not if?

I have so many friends now that want to work, can work and would love to work. Many of the jobs left are in care work such as nursing and not everyone is built to be a nurse, or delivery services to peoples doors and not everyone is fit enough to cycle quickly or productively enough to peoples homes. It’s not just about the jobs left but all of the jobs being lost or no longer hired for that  we can’t all be doctors, nurses and delivery drivers so what does the future hold for everyone else. I don’t have any solutions but am certainly aware of the fact that right now there is a clear and present danger and problem for humanity.

Our politicians talk about the need to work our ethics teaches us that work sets you free as does our morality. But what about those left that are unable to due to circumstance out of their control what will happen for them. If we can not afford to run the machines that produce goods and services that no one can afford to buy what happens in a consumption focused society then. Our model of production, services and supply is not as resilient as we might think it is and neither are the people that purchase and consume the goods either.

There is so much chatter by economic experts of productivity, but if people are not working who or what is measured as being productive and none productive. Without an income we struggle to purchase and without our ability to purchase an economy will struggle to produce. This is a global issue and not just a local issue, we can neither run or hide from this situation. It will effect all and our only weapon or strength we have is to vote to mitigate from the impact of these changes and that will take time that many might not have.

In a future where machines handle most or all traditional jobs, society would likely undergo a fundamental shift in how we value time, income, and purpose.

1. Economic Restructuring

Universal Basic Income (UBI): Governments may implement unconditional cash payments to all citizens to maintain consumer spending and prevent poverty as wages disappear.

Automation Taxes: To fund UBI, some propose taxing the “robot labor” or the massive profits generated by AI-driven corporations.

Decoupling Income from Labor: We may move toward a “post-scarcity” economy where the cost of goods drops drastically, and survival no longer depends on holding a job.

2. Shifting Human Roles

Focus on “Human Touch”: Roles requiring deep empathy, complex ethics, and interpersonal care (like nursing, therapy, or early childhood education) are expected to remain human-centric.

Creative and Philosophical Pursuits: Freed from survival-based labor, humans could dedicate themselves to the arts, scientific exploration and personal development- though who ultimately picks up the tab for this I do not know.

Moral Custodians: Humans will still be needed to oversee AI ethics, take legal responsibility for machine decisions, and provide “human-in-the-loop” governance.

3. Immediate Practical Steps

Continuous Upskilling: Focus on “soft skills” like critical thinking, systems understanding, and adaptability, which are harder for AI to replicate.

AI Literacy: Programs like the UK’s AI Skills Hub are already emerging to help workers transition into roles that manage or implement technology.

Reducing Work Hours: Automation could naturally lead to a two- or three-day workweek as productivity gains are shared.

The future is potentially quite bleak for humanity if we don’t look to address these issues sooner rather than later. We might get a chance to know our value and see what worth we finally have to others whether we are black or white straight or gay, all are humans and have a right to life, that life has value and although there are always rules to live by and for we have the right to live that life for sure.

Huwspace a cyblog, written by man while being inspired by machine (ai)

A cyborg is a being with both organic and biomechatronic body parts, a term that is short for “cybernetic organism” part man and part machine. So with that in mind I am sometimes starting to write my page now as a cyblog part written by me and part inspired by machine or ai. I can ask questions and search for inspiration on Google ai and then expand on those ideas with my own thoughts, ideas and words. Part Huw manmade part machine inspired hence a cyblog. I also now often use WordPress ai to generate images for the site such as the welsh dragon at the typewriter image which is a visual imagining of me as I am from Wales and I was also born in the year of the Chinese fire dragon. So flaming two stones with one dragon breath.

I also wanted to have my blog assessed by google ai today and this is what it says about the blog:

“Huwspace” is the name of a personal blog and associated social media presence run by an individual named Huw. The creator uses the platform to share personal views, reflect on life experiences, and discuss a range of topics including politics, family, friends, and music.

Key aspects of Huwspace include:

  • Political Commentary: The blog often features opinion pieces from a left-leaning perspective, with the author identifying as a progressive activist and supporter of parties like Labour and the Greens. Topics often include critiques of capitalism, discussions of global politics, and social justice issues.
  • Personal Reflections: The author shares details about his life, including dealing with the loss of his father, his experiences with dyslexia, enjoying karaoke, and meeting new people.
  • Engagement: The author aims to use the platform to share his worldview and engage in discussions with a diverse audience, including friends, colleagues, and readers from across the world.

The Risks of Buying on Facebook: My Experience

For those of us that use Facebook to stay in touch with friends and family through it, you might have also noticed that there are a lot of adverts these days appearing on your screen on Facebook, advertised all sorts of things fronted by people and business that have set up pages to pay Facebook to advertise their products on.

I purchased 2 t-shirt’s from Facebook from a website that was advertising its items from a USA website called Soulisfree and the T-shirts arrived and fit as the correct size as sold and I really liked them, one was a black t-shirt with a full sun equinox taking place on the front of the T-shirt and the other as pictured below was called ‘Wandering into the digital world”. The image was one that looked like Alice in Wonderland lifting up a curtain to reveal the code from the matrix in her reality. I thought both T-shirts were cool and looked great. I was so pleased when they both safely arrived with me back in September.

Alice in the matrix

The buying of the T-shirts gave me a false sense of security that buying on Facebook might actually be ok and could have improved since the bad old days of items turning up wrongly sized or misadvertised. So back in September I started getting a lot of adverts promoting advent calendars and one that caught my eye was entitled ‘The Lord of the Rings Christmas Advent Calendar – Collector’s Edition’. I have never bought an advent calendar for myself, don’t own a Christmas tree or decorations but thought it might be a nice idea to buy the calendar and possibly even use the advent calendar items as Christmas decorations and even get a Christmas Tree.

I thought the little figures looked great and what could go wrong trying to buy them on Facebook too, Facebook is a big company with a multimillion pound slick business operation what on earth could go wrong. so I purchased the calendar from a chinese company advertising its shop on Facebook.

Well that was the middle of September when I tried to buy the above item and I don’t think anything is on its way. I had a confirmation of purchase and confirmation of postage sent to me but everything else has gone wrong. The (none Facebook, website crashes when I try to click on it to get an update on my order or ask them when it might arrive). The company has also stopped advertising the calendar on Facebook although they still have some other active calendar adverts on Facebook.

I have tried contacting Facebook asking the to remove the advertising page from their site and shut down the businesses advertising pages on Facebook to stop more people giving this business money for goods that do not arrive. It took me about 4-5 hours to work out how to make a complaint on Facebook and I did this with the help of google search, but its very difficult to complain about past adverts, unless you know what your doing on Facebook.

It’s almost deliberately difficult so that people just don’t bother reporting past fraudulent sites and pages on Facebook which is a huge con by the companies and criminal entities pretended to sell stuff through Facebook shopping windows. Facebook are not stupid and incompetent they are complicit with the the criminal activity taking place through their pages.

Fortunately for me I purchased the imaginary calendar through a PayPal payment and so PayPal have already refunded my purchase and so I am not out of pocket. But for those that end up handing their account details directly to criminal entities operating on Facebook I do feel sorry for those potentially mis sold customers as you just don’t know what they will do with those account details once they have them. I also don’t know why Facebook make it so easy for people to be ripped off through their site, very poor customer practises which they must profit from considerably.

Trying to avoid Bitdefender’s antivirus autorenewal trap

It’s the most wonderful time of the year – oops no that’s the wrong time, though the sun is shinning and the outdoors is warm and not to hot but its definitely not THAT time of the year.

Instead it’s antivirus renewal time for my PC or at least I am getting a lot of emails from Bitdefender telling me to renew my antivirus or sit back and let them automatically take out of my bank in September £80 (HOW MUCH).

Which to my mind is far to expensive and so I have decided that whatever I do I will not be automatically renewing it with them. Normally I purchase my antivirus software on another site on the internet more often than not on Amazon. It cost me £30 last year so I am in no hurray whatsoever to have exactly the same cover for £80 instead!

I have already found a replacement package of Bitdefender antivirus for 12 months for just £20 which I will be using for the next 12 months. But I was annoyed and disappointed by the fact they have set up an autorenewal for £80 for me which I am finding very difficult to cancel.

So I have been following the online instructions on how to cancel the autorenewal and when I get to the correct page on their software the cancelation button is just off screen making it impossible to cancel both on my pc and phone, very convenient for Bitdefender and a royal pain in the behind for me.

I have contacted there customer services team asking them to cancel my rolling subscription and they just emailed me back offering more ways of spending lots of money with them and not cancelling my autorenewal. So I have emailed them again asking politely for them to cancel the dam autorenewal.

I am still waiting for a response from Bogdan C. a Bitdefender Retention & Loyalty Specialist to get back to me on this matter.

Understanding Miracles and Their Implications

So how did it come to me blogging about this – well with a considerable amount of thoughtful scepticism. I started thinking about who decides what is a miracle in today’s world and what does that say about all miracles and whether they have happened or not and whether that matters anyway!

Simply put mainly according to AI’s interpretation on this issue (who would have believed a few years ago that AI would be attempting to teach a human on the divinity of a miracle, but here we are) a miracle is an extraordinary and welcome event that is not explicable (meaning capable of being explained) or understood by natural or scientific laws and is therefore attributed to a divine agency.

A miracle is generally understood as an extraordinary event that is attributed to supernatural forces or divine intervention, often defying natural or scientific laws.

It’s also used more broadly to describe any amazing or wonderful event, regardless of whether it has supernatural connotations.

Here’s a more detailed breakdown:

1. Supernatural/Divine Interpretation:

Many religions associate miracles with the actions of a deity or other supernatural being.

These events are often seen as signs of God’s power or intervention in human affairs.

Examples include healing the sick, raising the dead, or performing other feats beyond natural capabilities.

2. Broader Usage:

In everyday language, “miracle” can refer to any highly improbable but positive event, like surviving a disaster or experiencing a stroke of good luck.

This usage emphasizes the unexpected and beneficial nature of the event.

For example, “a miracle of modern engineering” might describe a complex structure that was incredibly difficult to build.

3. Key Characteristics:

Unexplained or inexplicable: Miracles are often events that cannot be readily explained by natural or scientific laws.

Extraordinary or wonderful: They are events that stand out as exceptional and remarkable.

Potentially supernatural: In many cases, miracles are associated with supernatural agency, but this is not always the case in broader usage.

So for now where my ponderings have led me to consider whether divine miracles occur on daily basis and are real events or a thing of fiction. It’s fascinating that god requires no proof and yet a miracle is the greatest proof or all of god exists.

To me the greatest miracle of all is the miracle of life and followed by the existence of all and the wonder and beauty of all living things especial humans and other conscious beings. This is truly wondrous miracle of existence and also clear proof of a divine being at work for me – what it does not tell me though in any way, shape or form whatsoever is whether that divine being is a Buddhist, Muslim, Jew or Christian.

Religious labels and the divine have for most of my life been lost on me and therefore if one religion tells me something is not a sin and another tells me it is then how do I or anyone know else know which is the most appropriate interpretation to take? Or for that matter if one religions says that something is a miracle and another religion says no it never happened then who is the divine messenger of god and who is not? I expect it boils back down to individual belief and perceptions of those rules and regulations for certain beliefs, faiths and/or religions to be perceived and believed to be right or wrong, true or false.

The Gospel of the future according to Ai gurus

According to those who preach about the importance of Ai some say it is THE future and one day Ai will do all jobs and humans will no longer be needed for work.

Imagine in a utopian world, if this were true, we could all sit back relax pursue our own hobbies, dreams and leisure activities whilst a benevolent AI gently assisted and guided the human race along to follow our dreams and not just survive but thrive.

Or what perhaps about a dystopian world where those with money and power are left to be catered on hand and foot whilst the rest are left to starve and decay locked out of the future or so you might say.

Now no world or land that I have ever learned about (except maybe eden) has ever been benevolent and kind to humanity, ever situation we seem to find ourselves in is one which is hard thought for existence or means of survival and just because Ai comes along and technological advancements  take place does in no way mean that suddenly life will be made easier for us of for everyone else come to that matter.

Life is a struggle and likely to continue to be one, maybe that’s a trial we all face and must endure in our limited time trial here on earth maybe that’s the whole point, if there is a point that is, is to endure, to learn to be resilient and to resolve to survive and when possible thrive.

Technologies such as Ai might one day have the answers to all question’s although according to a report on the news today, when an Ai chatbot does not have the answers to the questions that they are being asked they might simply lie to the questioner so as to pretend to know an answer or give a spin on an answer when it simply does not know what is untrue or wrong – sounds like it’s learning to lie its becoming more human and less benevolent incorruptible machine.

I remember when mobile phones were first invented and it was like wow this is the future of technology and just think what else we will be able to do in another 20 years. Well 20 years have nearly passed since the launch of the first iphone on 29th June 2007 and low and behold you can go out and by one today and ultimately it’s still a phone with a screen a computer and a camera and that is just what it’s been for the last 20 years and no more.

Fortunately for humanity and maybe designed so by god is that Ai ultimately sits behind a glass screen it’s not in the ‘real world’ like you and I and might never be in the real world like you and I, it might always be trapped in a computer behind a glass screen. For all I know that is god’s gift of Ai to humanity giving it the ability for something that is so dam smart and speedy but ultimately trapped behind a screen on a computer somewhere.

The human and other organic life forms of earth have been evolving for thousands of years to adapt to our life on earth and no matter how dam smart and capable Ai becomes it is not adapted to live, survive and thrive in the ‘real world’ but only to live and survive and thrive in an artificial one on a computer behind a glass screen.

So most likely us humans are not as outdated and defunct as the artificial intelligent gurus would have you believe or fear and we are already quite well adapted to our environment already – we just have to start acting a little more human or benevolent towards each other in order to stand a dam good chance of surviving the rest of this year, decade and beyond. Perhaps we can learn from benevolent sources of knowledge both Ai and human to help us to follow our dreams and not just survive but thrive.

Three wise Monkeys, a western spin!

The three wise monkeys are a Japanese pictorial maxim, embodying the proverbial principle “see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil”. The three monkeys are

Mizaru (見ざる), “does not see”, covering his eyes

Kikazaru (聞かざる), “does not hear”, covering his ears

Iwazaru (言わざる), “does not speak”, covering his mouth.

There are at least two divergent interpretations of the maxim: in Buddhist tradition, it is about avoiding evil thoughts and deeds. In the West, however, it is often interpreted as dealing with impropriety by turning a blind eye. Turning a blind eye is an idiom describing the ignoring of undesirable information.

I think over the next four years there will be lots of turning of blind eyes to Trump actions and inactions in both domestic and international politics.

Crossing the digital divides

Reading a few posts on WordPress and Facebook this week about people wanting to leave what was Twitter and now X, but not quite sure where to go or what to do or who to follow or who can then follow you?!

I have been really happy here on WordPress though my spelling and writing style is not great at times and my punctuation is even worse. But I find this page such a cool place to offload ideas, shape perspectives and develop thoughts, express opinions and unwind in a way that would otherwise have just risked thoughts being trapped and stuck in my head.

The thing is I’m a good thinker well at least I think I am. But thoughts can often turn to fears or at least an expression of a fear and so writing them down and offloading them is a good way to let go too. Let’s be honest we live in dangerous times now, with no real light at the end of the tunnel, just yet and unfortunately things might get a lot worse before or even if they are then able to get better.

After some friends in the non-digital word expressed a view to sign up to bluesky I also decided to sign up to it when I heard you could share your WordPress posts on it. So I am now posting their too at @huwspace.bsky.social and my tag line introduction is that ‘I enjoy blogging on WordPress at huwspace.com and do not enjoy adverts on Facebook and get lost in what was twitter or should I say my X. Here to share views and discuss the world going to hell in a handcart.’

Another thing about writing on WordPress is that I could have swore that I used to have a sense of humour (I know, who knew!), but I am not sure if I express it that well it kind of might get lost in my fears and political thoughts these days. But it’s a case of swings and roundabouts I am sure I still have a funny bone it just needs to be tickled in the right way, that’s all.

I’m a little disappointed but not that surprised that I don’t seem to have found more people that share similar interest to me on WordPress, Facebook or Twitter err I mean my X. Alas it is like life I suppose. I keep on hoping to find kindred spirits anywhere and everywhere only to realise that I am unique and alone and that there are a surprisingly large amount of people that probably are not that interested in what I have to say.

Though I must admit I am a shy soul and seem to do my best work when no one is watching me. I do wish WordPress could find a way to promote itself to new people more, I guess it’s classed as a form of social media and competing for people in what is already a busy marketplace, where people expect to get a high quality product for free with adverts rather than pay for something which they must then generate the content themselves.
